It is one of the few genuinely useful pieces of advice in the whole business of buying diamond rings Melbourne buyers get told repeatedly. If you want a stone to look larger, choose an elongated shape. An oval reads bigger than a round of the same weight, and it makes the finger look longer while it is at it.
That advice is true. It is also incomplete in a way that costs people money, because an elongated stone can just as easily disappear on the hand it was meant to flatter.
Here is how the effect actually works, when it fails, and what to do about it.
What Elongated Actually Means
An elongated cut is one whose length is meaningfully greater than its width. The shapes usually grouped this way are oval, emerald, radiant, marquise, pear and the elongated versions of cushion and old mine cuts.
There is no single agreed threshold where a stone becomes elongated. An elongated cushion can start to read that way at around 1.15, while most of the other shapes sit comfortably higher, and a marquise sits higher again. Treat it as a dial rather than a category.
Why A Longer Stone Covers More Finger
The mechanism is simple once you separate two things people routinely conflate. Carat is a unit of weight, equal to a fifth of a gram, and it says nothing directly about how much of a stone you can see. Two diamonds of identical carat can present quite different dimensions face up.
Where that weight sits is what matters. A round brilliant carries a substantial portion of its mass in the pavilion, the cone below the girdle, and depth down there adds carat without adding a millimetre of visible diameter. An elongated cut typically trades some of that depth for length.
The result is more visible surface for the same weight, plus a silhouette that runs along the finger rather than across it. Both effects are real. Neither is guaranteed.
The Part Nobody Tells You
Watch what happens when someone actually tries several shapes on the same hand and asks for opinions. The answers do not converge on the elongated ones.

Others were blunter still, describing elongated shapes as getting lost on the finger. An emerald cut has large, open facets and very little of the scattering that a brilliant cut uses to disguise what is inside. Clarity is assessed by the visibility of inclusions, and a step cut simply gives them nowhere to hide.
The practical consequence is that an emerald cut usually wants a cleaner stone than the equivalent oval or radiant, which is a real cost worth planning for rather than discovering late.
Points Need Protecting
Pear and marquise stones have sharp ends, and sharp ends are where diamonds chip. The standard advice is to shield them with a bezel, a partial bezel or a V shaped claw made for the purpose. It is a small decision at the design stage and an expensive one to revisit later.
Very Thin Bands Are A False Economy
