How to clean your diamond rings (A 5-step guide)

Whether you have just got used to wearing your beautiful new diamond ring or you have cherished it for many years, it’s easy to forget the tips and tricks you were given at the time of purchase on how to clean and care for your ring. While you can always pop into our showroom to get your diamond ring professionally cleaned and checked, it is great to know how to clean it at home too.

Caring for your ring is the first step, as you might have noticed if your jewellery is worn every day the shine can be blurred as dust and oils build up. Especially as the normal routines of moisturising your hands and cooking contribute to the dirt building up over time. With all maintenance, it’s great if you can develop good habits to prevent a build-up of these things that stick to your ring. This includes not wearing your diamond rings while cooking, cleaning, and always putting them on after moisturizing. You might also notice a build-up of soap around your diamond earrings if they are worn in the shower.

Five easy steps, tips and tricks to care for your diamond ring

It can be a little daunting at first, cleaning such a precious treasure as your diamonds. Not to worry, it just takes some care and patience. Here, we will step you through the process of restoring the light and sparkle of a fresh clean and polish. And soon enough you will get an influx of comments on how mesmerising your engagement ring is and friends asking you for tips on how you maintain that bling!

What you will need

Warm water (almost hot)

Dishwashing liquid

Bowl

Soft toothbrush

Soft lint-free cloth/ tissues

Five easy steps

  1. Fill a bowl with warm (almost hot) tap water.
  2. Mix in a good squirt of dishwashing liquid – just as this works on dirty dishes to remove grease and grime, it does the exact same thing for your diamonds – removing body oil and moisturisers etc. which are responsible for leaving a film on your diamonds.
  3. Leave your diamond rings to soak in the solution for 20-40 minutes.
  4. Brush gently under the setting of your diamond ring and all around the diamond itself with a soft toothbrush.
  5. Rinse under cold water and pat dry with a lint-free cloth or tissues, or just leave to air dry.

Voilà! Your diamond’s beautiful sparkle is restored. You can repeat this process once a week or as you feel is necessary. It is better to give it another soak and gentle brush and never a hard scrub.

Remember, to never use sharp objects otherwise you risk scratching the metal or loosening the diamond setting.

Despite advice you might come across, never use chlorine, bleach, acetone, household cleaners or toothpaste when cleaning diamond jewellery. These can break down the metals of your jewellery or scratch it; they are also unnecessary.

Cleaning other diamond jewellery

The same process can be used to clean other diamond jewellery such as necklaces, bracelets, and earrings. For diamond earrings it is worth putting them in a tea strainer so when rinsing them they do not fall down the sink.

For other precious stones such as rubies and sapphires the same process is fine, just be more careful when brushing the stone. Emeralds cannot go under hot water so be sure to use lukewarm water only when cleaning these pieces.

Along with your cleaning routine, other good habits to develop to maintain your diamond ring include not wearing it at the gym or for vigorous sports. These will put pressure on the setting and misshape it, potentially leading to loosening its grip on the diamond. Swimming and other water activities where hands are wet also presents the risk of a diamond ring slipping off.

Shine bright, like a diamond

The facets of a diamond work like a sequence of lots of little mirrors reflecting light, creating a stunning sparkle. Regular cleaning of your diamond ring as a conscious habit will help to keep it shiny.

We are also here to support you with this care, we offer cleaning in the showroom where you can walk in and have your engagement and wedding rings cleaned and checked.

Additionally, it is also recommended that you have a full service deep clean at our workshop at least once, or even better, twice a year to keep it in tip top shape.

Even though diamond is the hardest natural substance on Earth, the oil from our hands can cause dirt to collect and make this nearly indestructible gemstone quickly lose its lustrous appeal. By following the steps listed above, you will keep your diamond ring sparkling clean.
